Repeater News - GB3VT - NEW AERIAL

Following the failure of the original (28 years old) colinear aerial and after
that of a 20 month delay, last November 2010 the order for the replacement GB3VT
aerial was placed with Jaybeam and some six weeks later the new aerial was duly
delivered.

Waiting for a suitable break in the recent harsh weather conditions has proven a
bit of a problem.
However, I am now able to confirm the installation of the replacement aerial at
the repeater site has been fully completed and is in use by the repeater
equipment.

Repeater News - GB3MN / GB3MR

Peter G8NSS went up to recommission GB3MR today and he fixed GB3MN while he was up there.

Both repeaters appear to working quite well now.

GB3MN was very busy late afternoon and early evening with mainly mobiles and some fixed stations. They all commented on the great improvement in the performance of GB3MN.

Hopefully all is now well.

Repeater News - GB3SM & GB3SX - Aerial Work at The Staffordshire Moorlands Repeater Site.

In making the most of this weekends dry weather, the annual pre-winter engineering examination of the Staffordshire Moorlands aerial
installation for the GB3SM and GB3SX repeaters has been completed.

With the repeater site located at 1140 feet above sea level, it's not the type of engineering work easily carried out in the middle of winter
with gale force winds and four feet of snow on the ground.

My thanks go to Paul 2E1EUB and Phil G4SCY for all the ladder work involved, these days I prefer (whenever possible) to keep my feet firmly on the ground.

Further to my message NUMBER 1893: >>> I also intend to design and build a suitable interface to enable full Remote Control of the repeaters output power to hopefully make testing of the current problem and situation a little easier. Once the interface (yet to be designed, built and installed) is on site, the repeaters transmitter output power will be reduced as required <<<.

The news is I've now completed the design work involved plus fully built and bench tested the said mentioned interface and I'm currently
attempting to set aside a suitable day to install the interface on site.

In the meantime ferrite beads etc have been fitted where appropriate to the CCTV system and as I type (I hope I don't speak to soon) the
background noise is greatly reduced.

Geoff, G8DZJ.

AGM 2011

A Date has been set for next years AGM.

Date: Monday 5th September 2011

Location:

Warrington ARC Radio Room,

c/o Grappenhall Community Centre, Bellhouse Lane, Grappenhall, Warrington.

Repeater News - GB3MR - 18th August 2010

Latest info I have about GB3MR.

The receiver and the logic have been removed from site and are currently under test, but because it's an intermittent fault, it's not proving that easy to pin point the problem.

I hope to have some more news in a day or so.

Please bear with us - we hope to have MR back soon.

In the meantime there are 16 other repeaters to go at, 1 on 6M, 4 on 2M, 10 on 70cms and 1 on 23cms.

Repeater News - GB3SM - Staffordshire Moorlands (5)

GB3SM Staffordshire Moorlands.

GB3SM, Received Interference from Pager Transmitter.

To summarise the various events that have taken place between the 6th to 15th July, regards the received paging interference to the GB3SM (and later discovered GB3CB) 70cm Repeater receivers.

1) July 6th, first effects of the Paging Interference were heard.
2) Weekend of the 10th and 11th of July, the source of the interfering paging signal was located by Paul 2E1EUB and Phil G4SCY, as the New Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
3) Whilst the paging transmitter was confirmed to be transmitting on it's correctly allocated frequency, it was also and at the same time transmitting on several unauthorised frequencies.
4) At no time was the Hospital in any way to blame, the problem and fault was entirely down to the company that supplied and installed the Paging Equipment.
5) During the early stages of investigation it was discovered that the Birmingham UHF Repeater GB3CB was also experiencing a receiver problem of desense, but at that stage the keeper was unaware of the true cause of the said problem.
6) It was positively confirmed that both GB3SM and GB3CB's receive problems were being caused from the same source, the out of specification 50 watt ERP paging transmitter.
7) I made contact with a helpful PMR company in Birmingham City Centre, conveniently located only one mile from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital it was now possible to supply a detailed report of the badly polluted UHF Radio Spectrum in and around the general area of Birmingham, whilst acting upon events here in Stoke-on-Trent.
8) Keeping in constant touch with both the Paging Equipment Company and Ofcom in London, the situation turned critical when other polluted frequencies were discovered.
9) Ofcom Field Ops were notified of the problem and a case number was raised to officially investigate the situation.
10) I notified the paging equipment company of Ofcom's post-haste intervention and they immediately dispatched an engineer to site.
11) The Spurious emissions were removed, but replaced with Wide Band White Noise.
12) The paging company sent more engineers to site and a Bandpass Filter was fitted along with other remedial work to rectify the problem.

All in all the problem was first noticed on the 6th July and corrected on the 15th July and time will tell if it stays that way, but should it reoccur then all the required ground work is now in place.

Whilst we will never know exactly just how many other users of the UHF Radio Spectrum were also affected by the rouge transmitter, I do suspect it may well have been several dozen and with the close proximity of Birmingham International Airport, the consequences could have been very serious indeed.

Repeater News - GB3SM - Staffordshire Moorlands (4)

To all concerned,

During the earlier part of today, I was informed that not only was the paging system causing a problem with GB3SM's receiver, but it was also causing some grief to GB3CB in Birmingham.
However and much worse than that came the news that it was also transmitting a further RF carrier on 473.325 MHz and the situation was about to turn critical.

At about 1445 Hrs I had a discussion with the Technical Director at the company that's supplied the paging equipment, at long last a proper technical discussion that actually made some sense, for starters the TX frequency is controlled by a PIC and not as I was previously informed crystal controlled.
After discussing the various issues involved, plus the implication that other systems may also be suffering, he dispatched an engineer to site.

At approximately 1710 Hrs the interference problem on GB3SM stopped and I decided to text the Technical Director to explain the new situation, to this he text back stating: "Thanks, the engineers will also be returning to site tomorrow".

Fingers crossed we can now confine this one to the history books and a site visit by Ofcom Field Ops will not be required.

My thanks go to Rod Wilkinson at Ofcom London.

Geoff G8DZJ.

Repeater News - GB3SM - Staffordshire Moorlands (3)

GB3SM, RB13, Staffordshire Moorlands. Paging Interference.

To all concerned.

Today I have been speaking to both the Hospital Maintenance Staff and the company that supplied and installed the paging equipment and in both instances a level of concern has been expressed.

To-date the Paging Equipment has already changed frequency twice.
Firstly, it was initially and mistakenly programmed up for an entirely wrong frequency and upon discovery of the engineers error it was then corrected as required.
The second occasion was when the paging transmitter was found to interfere with a call for prayers installation at a local mosque.

It transpires that the equipment installation company concerned did indeed make a site visit on the day that the interference started to occur, but they are adamant that on the day in question, no adjustments were carried out by their engineers, "an amazing coincidence".

Further discussions with all parties concerned are planned to take place during the next few days.

73,
Geoff, G8DZJ.

Repeater News - GB3SM - Staffordshire Moorlands (2)

GB3SM RB13, Staffordshire Moorlands.

Hello all,

I can advise that the location of the rouge pager transmitter has now been found, it's located at the New Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

A new Hospital that's just opened at a cost over £600 million, it employs 6900 people and they manage to commission a Paging System on the wrong frequency, I suppose that says it all really.

Still, it could have been worse, had they have chosen a different frequency and being close to Birmingham International Airport they could have caused a major disaster, perhaps a novel way of bringing in new patients.

First to track down the exact location (others were very close) proved to be a team effort between Paul 2E1EUB and Phil G4SCY.
They win the fully exclusive all expenses paid two week Holiday for 2 in the Bahamas courtesy of our sponsor "G & G Plastic Buckets of Bursley"
Thanks to the many others that also took part (unfortunately we only have the one prize), and to those that failed to turn up (well, bet you wished you'd had a go now).

So with that it's now over to Ofcom and we await to see what happens next.

73,
Geoff, G8DZJ.

Repeater News - GB3SM - Staffordshire Moorlands (1)

GB3SM RB13, Staffordshire Moorlands.

Since the earlier part of this week (the 5th or 6th of July 2010) transmissions originating from a Hospital Pager system have appeared on the input frequency of the GB3SM repeater and whilst the said offending signal is not particularly strong in strength it is never the less perfectly audible involving a combination of both data and voice content such as Cardiac Arrest, Maternity and A&E etc, including personal details of patients, all helping to provide a clue to the Hospitals Location.

The transmission is on the actual input frequency of the repeater, "IT IS DEFINITELY NOT A MIX". It is originating from a location 190 degrees (South) of the repeater site at Ipstones Edge near Alton Towers, possibly located in the West Midlands or surrounding area. As the repeater site is located at 1140 feet ASL, the line of sight coverage footprint is extensive.

It is my intention to inform OFCOM of the rouge transmission and whilst I have no idea to exactly what OFCOM may decide to do to the company concerned such as fine them etc, but personally speaking, I would much prefer castration of the owners of the company responsible for this total blatant disregard of the Radio Spectrum with respect to ourselves the Licensed Stakeholder.

However and now this is the interesting bit, should those that wish to practise radio just as it used to be practised many years ago, then the opportunity exists complete with the aid of a small beam type aerial to test your skills at direction finding. Just listen on the input from two or three conveniently placed high locations, complete with map and compass and go for it. At this stage I can't say there will be a prize for the first to locate the transmission, but at least you will certainly feel the satisfaction of knowing you were successful in locating the offending transmitter.

Geoff, G8DZJ.

Repeater News - GB3LL

Hi There
GB3LL Is now running to full spec. All howlround problems etc are now sorted, sensitivity is improved by about 8-10db and line gain is now correctly set. Its now as stable and placid as an old basset hound! Suffice it to say that Peter and myself are now more than satisfied with it's performance.

John - Callsign G8LZO

Repeater News - GB3LL - Now Operational

GB3LL is back on air today as promised.

Still more work to be done over the next couple of weeks or so, to get to full performance but still working quite well.

Line gain is set a little high, which makes through audio sound a little over processed, also a bit of work required to get that extra db or two out of the receiver. Rest assured it will soon be up to full spec.

Regards
John - Callsign G8LZO

Repeater News - GB3LL

It was hoped to be able to bring GB3LL back on-air this weekend (ie 1/2/3rd May) but some of the work has taken longer than anticipated.

The plan is to bring the repeater back into operation next weekend (ie 8th/9th May).

This delay is disappointing but rest assured every effort has and is being made to bring the unit back into operation as quickly as possible.

Best regards

Repeater News - GB3MN

Due to abuse/interference issues, and as instructed by Ofcom, GB3MN has been switched off.  Discussions are ongoing and it is hoped to be able to bring  the repeater back into service shortly.  If, once the box is switched back on, the abuse/interference restarts then it’s possible the unit will be switched off again.

If you have any information regarding the offending stations please forward the details to the group, in the first instance to the repeater keeper copied to me – see web site for contact details.
