History

GB3LL was the first Welsh 70cms repeater to be licensed in the late 1970's. It was first sited on the edge of Llandullas Quarry, between Abergele and Colwyn Bay. The quarry manager and a Director of the firm, who then owned the site, was Frank Wiseman - GW3GRY.

A small building for the accomodation of the equipment was offered free of charge.
Morris - GW8FQF, provided the Transmitter and Receiver, (U450L ex-pmr),
Martin - GW8IMB built the logic,
Roy - GW8XLL (Martin's father) made the Antennas.
The coverage was very limited to the south and very patchy to the west.
Frank - GW3GRY then moved to South Wales, at around the same time the quarry changed. A new location had to be found for GB3LL.
John - GW8WFS (the present N.O.V. holder) found a suitable site near the summit of the Great Ormes Head, to the North of Llandudno.
A site change, complete with new antennas took place in the early 1980's, with much improved coverage to the south and west.
Since the site change, the Transmitter / Receiver has been updated to a much modified Pye F460/470 (again provided by Morris - GW8FQF), new logic has been built and installed.
Weather has been the main adversary with the hut being completely blown over on at least one occasion and the antennas have needed replacement several times. The present antennas are vertical co-linears for both transmit and receive.
